night time styles - styled frames

I used for this concept piece, a similar colour pallet to Van Gogh's 'starry night' painting.

What I like about Van gogh's paining is his use of blue and yellow, the way it intensely contrasts, yet romantically. In my version, I added darker tones and some purples to create a darker, less romantic style. Further using his use of yellow, black and blue to create a stronger contrast and dramatic effect.
In Van Gogh's legacy, we know that he was depressed and going through mental difficulties; struggling to cope. He also struggled finally, and dealt with a lot of loss in his life time. It is known that he once tried to reach happiness by eating yellow paint, believing yellow to be a happy colour.
Which signifies that this painting that visually looks romantic and pleasing, has the opposite meaning
; he could represent isolation, as it overlooks the town not shown from with it, the stars that look beautiful have a darker representation, the bright yellow, a happiness that he can not reach.
Which I find makes Van Gogh's work more interesting and intriguing, a more effective colour pallet for the animation as in this shot the scissors have murdered the pencil brutally, the shot is supposed be sympathetic towards the broken pencil.

This colour pallet was inspired by Tim Burtons Corpse brides colour scheme.

I feel the use of blue tones  have made this less dramatic and does nothing to draw the eye in. I find it not only non visually appealing, but not very effective in story telling. It may look more like night but I need to work on lines and colours, shadows, overall mise en scene to more effectively represent the story and mood that I am trying to set.

Tim Burton tends to have a gothic style, that has influences from German expressionism, film noir and old horror films, tinted with own stylistic features of swirls, dainty thin crooked details, dull colours with a strong black.

For the next week I would:

- like to develop my colour pallet and style using different mediums, such as charcoal, paints and colour pencils.
-I would also like to research into different styles, such as comic books, horros, jaws, cow boy films ect.
One film Id like to look at is Sin City, a stylised film inspired by comics. That uses selective colorization, the film is a high contrasted black and white, with one object or feature red, such as a red dress or lips.
